Letter to his Grandparents, Alfred and Grace Carver

Dear Grandparents,
I thought but I seem to have thought wrong. If I’d been asked a week ago I would have said that before now we would be far away from Europe. Maybe we’ll be on our way before long now though.
I have so little to say that I am not going to write home today so I’d appreciate it if you’d let Mother know that you heard from me. We aren’t doing anything but waiting to leave so there just isn’t anything to write about. But you sure can’t complain about working too hard now. This is the most complete vacation we’ve had. I really believe though that it would be easier if we had something to do. Time really goes slowly when you’re just waiting. I am wondering how things are coming in Orestes now. By this time the remodeling job over at our house should be about completed. How are you coming with your work this summer? I suppose you’re having quite a bit of fresh eats from your garden now. Fresh vegetables are one thing we just haven’t had over here and I’m really going to catch up when I get home - especially good old lettuce sandwiches. Of course, there are a lot other things I’m going to have to catch up on.
Richard is deep in his work at Purdue now and by the time this reaches you he should be beginning to find out a little about it. I’m sure glad he’s doing that instead of what he might be doing. I just hope that his work doesn’t have to be interrupted now.
Have you heard anything from Ben or Maurice lately? Maurice should be finishing his boot training pretty soon now. I hope he gets to come home for a little visit before he starts something else. Do you have any idea what sort of work he intends to get into.
I guess day before yesterday was they quietest fourth of July I’ve ever seen. There just wasn’t anything doing. How did you spend the day?
Well I hope to be seeing you before too much longer. God bless you,
Your grandson,
Donald
